Rupees at the time of British Empire
August 20, 2008
The first set of British India notes were the ‘Victoria Portrait’ Series issued in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 1000. These were uni-face, carried two language panels and were printed on hand-moulded paper manufactured at the Laver stock Paper Mills (Portals). The security features incorporated the watermark (GOVERNMENT OF INDIA, RUPEES, two signatures and wavy lines), the printed signature and the registration of the notes.
British India Notes facilitated inter-spatial transfer of funds. As a security precaution, notes were cut in half. One set was sent by post. On confirmation of receipt, the other half was dispatched by post.
Small Denomination Notes
The introduction of small denomination notes in India was essentially in the realm of the exigent. Compulsions of the First World War led to the introduction of paper currency of small denominations. Rupee one was introduced on 30th November, 1917 followed by the exotic Rupees Two Anaas Eight. The issuance of these notes was discontinued on 1st January, 1926 on cost benefit considerations. These notes first carried the portrait of King George V and were the precursors of the ‘King’s Portrait’ Series which were to follow.
Regular issues of this Series carrying the portrait of George V were introduced in May, 1923 on a Ten Rupee Note. The King’s Portrait Motif continued as an integral feature of all Paper Money issues of British India. Government of India continued to issue currency notes till 1935 when the Reserve Bank of India took over the functions of the Controller of Currency. These notes were issued in denominations of Rs 5, 10, 50, 100, 500, 1000, 10,000.
Rupees Five – First Note issued by Reserve Bank of India
This was followed by Rs 10 in February, Rs 100 in March and Rs 1,000 and Rs 10,000 in June 1938.
In August 1940, the one-rupee note was reintroduced, once again as a war time measure, as a Government note with the status of a rupee coin.
As an added security feature, the security thread was introduced for the first time in India
The George VI series continued till 1947 and thereafter as a frozen series till 1950 when post independence notes were issued.

Wow, that seemed like traveling though history! What’s with the “Rupees Two Annas Eight”, hehe. Sounds weird.
But this was really good information
~ First I thought it was Two Rupees and Eight Anaas but on the note it is given as “Rupees Two Annas Eight”. Thanks for the comments, jaan

Wow itni extensive list bro.. keep it up. Yeah the aana shaana thing was kind of funny. Like if someone would sell bananas they would be
“yah that would be Two Rupees Eight anaas for the two bananas”
But yah keep it up.. really interesting stuff
~Thanks for the comments bro and Welcome to my blog. Kaash Two Rupees Eight Anaas abhi hotey tho eidi deney kaam ata;)

Thanks. It is a trip down memory lane. Time was when a bundle of crisp one rupee notes was a small fortune. And two bananas cost quarter of an anna or 3 pies or 1/64th of a rupee.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks for your comment and welcome to my blog. Two bananas cost 1/64th of a rupee.. oooohh we now buy for almost 1dhm(UAE Dirham) per banana which costs around 12 Indian Rupees…. wht a difference:(
Hi Everyone,
Interesting to see all the paper currency. Interesting to see how people give up gold and silver to get a piece of paper in their hand, which one day will be worthless.
Anyway, Rs 2 and 8 Anaas, was about equivalent to US$1.00, or so, I have heard. 11.7 grams of 22 carat silver (91.67%) was about equal to one troy ounce (31.1 gm) of sterling silver (90%). In those day, the US had silver currency.
One more question. Anyone know why in the world and what it means “I promise to pay the bearer the sum of 5 Rupees” (or whatever denomination) and signed (guaranteed) by the governor of the Reserve Bank. It is still on every rupee note except 1 Rupee note.
My take is that when people exchanged real silver for paper money, it was guaranteed by the reserve bank that upon presentation of the rupees note back again to the bank, they can get silver coins. However, today, if you ask the bank or reserve bank for silver coins in exchange for paper money, they will probably call the cops on you.
Have a nice day.
Hello Idris,
Thanks for commenting on my post and interesting to know more about 2 Rupees 8 Anaas. This is what I found regarding the meaning of “I promise to pay” clause;
As per Section 26 of Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, the Bank is liable to pay the value of banknote. This is payable on demand by RBI, being the issuer. The Bank’s obligation to pay the value of banknote does not arise out of a contract but out of statutory provisions.
The promissory clause printed on the banknotes i.e., “I promise to pay the bearer an amount of X” is a statement which means that the banknote is a legal tender for X amount. The obligation on the part of the Bank is to exchange a banknote for coins of an equivalent amount.
It’s stunning, right???
Awesome!
Now this is what they say – “Money Talks”… Nice to know the subtle history around paper money, and that too around the indian context.
Thanks for your comments, hammy
Hi Everyone,
Peace be upon all of you.
” I promise to pay the bearer a sum of X rupees”
Once you give silver coins to a minister or governor, or Reserve Bank of India Governor, they will promise to do anything for you.
But remember, a promise is just a promise.
Bye.
Idris.
